The BoostMAX™ Concept is Simple:
We give the user control of their boost and power level while maximizing the OE control system within the parameters of a warranty friendly, plug and play non-tuning device.
A brief background for those who may not know about us:
At JMS we have been calibrating OEM factory ECU’s, since 1993. We were one of the founders of the Ford aftermarket tuning industry. Our company founder Chris Johnson then went on and founded SCT in 2003. JMS is also a pioneer in domestic vehicle calibrations and highly regarded as a foremost expert in Ford, GM and Chrysler powertrain and drivetrain systems.
How Does BoostMAX™ Work:
BoostMAX™ plugs into the factory MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor, TIP (turbo inlet pressure or turbocharger boost pressure) sensor, and the PPS (accelerator pedal position sensor). The MAP and TIP sensors signals are compared and modified to manage boost calculations. The PPS controls the activation and BoostMAX™ works seamlessly within the OE control system to provide a more powerful “factory” feel. Digital microprocessor technology allows the boost to be added proportionately with throttle input, and our remote control knob allows you establish pre-determined boost increases.
Ecoboost vehicles utilize a wideband O2 sensor from the factory. The OEM wideband has the ability to add up to an additional 30% of extra fuel to keep the engine operating safely while under extra boost. The factory Ford Wideband O2 control system is an immediate reaction control system, so there is no chance for lean conditions as fueling is adjusted in milliseconds.
Ecoboost vehicles also utilize a very robust spark knock strategy. The OE spark knock system is always looking for pre-ignition, and the OE knock sensor will trim the spark to match the combustion characteristics. The knock sensors will automatically adjust for
lower octane fuel, but with 87 octane fuel, it is recommended that you set the adjustment control knob at 60%, or use the red 87 octane chip included in the installation kit. Just like the Wideband O2 control system, there’s an immediate reaction once knock is sensed and spark adjustments are made in milliseconds.
What Should You Know:
BoostMAX™ is a warranty friendly way to add additional performance to your Ecoboost Vehicle! It also works great when stacked with other JMS products and custom JMS ECU tuning.
BoostMAX™ is a product that works as advertised. It functions seamlessly with the factory control system logic and it puts the additional power control directly in the hands of the user via a real time control knob. If you want stock performance set the knob at zero, or for big power numbers, set it at 100%… And Hold On! From the customer’s perspective, one notable thing about BoostMAX™ is the fact that we have performed long-term validation and testing across 17 different Ecoboost vehicles and customers for almost two years. We have collected a lot of data and we have had zero issues reported. Based on our customers’ feedback – We can highly recommend this product to anyone with an Ecoboost vehicle.
Another great feature of the BoostMAX™ product is that it can grow with you. If you’re worried about your warranty, this is a great starting product because it works as advertised. As your need for additional power comes along we can stack this product with our PedalMAX product for additional low-end torque. Then when you’re no longer worried about your warranty, JMS also offers BoostMAX™ specific custom tuning via SCT’s X4 to add additional performance to your vehicle. Customers also report a sizable fuel economy gain from using the BoostMAX™ product, of course if you can drive without sticking your foot into it at every stoplight. Reported gains have been +2mpg on 3.5l Ecoboost vehicles, and 1-2mpg on 1.6L and 2.0L vehicles. At 60% you will see a noticeable increase in performance, in fact many of our beta-testers are running at 60% and love it. They are also seeing good fuel economy improvements at 60% using 87 octane.
3.5L and 2.0L Ecoboost Tech Tip:
Ford 3.5L and 2.0L Ecoboost engines came from the factory with 2 different spark plug gaps. On early model Ford F-150 3.5L Ecoboost trucks, the spark plug gap was 0.035 or greater and reduced to 0.030 in later models. On early model Ford Fusions with 2.0L Ecoboost engine, the spark plug gap was 0.035 and reduced to 0.028 in later models. On all Ford Focus ST models with 2.0L Ecoboost engine, the spark plug gap is 0.035. This is very important and directly affects the performance of your vehicle when using BoostMAX™, aftermarket ECU tuning, and other types of modifications that increase boost levels. Some owners have reported some spark blow-out on engines that are not using the proper plug gap. Also, damage can occur to the plug causing intermittent spark blow-out at wide open throttle as a result of not using the proper plug gap. This issue is easy to resolve and you should always check or replace your spark plugs based on the following recommendations:
This applies to all 2011-2014 Ford F150 3.5L EcoBoost
equipped trucks and 2010-2014 Ford Taurus SHO 3.5L EcoBoost equipped cars. To eliminate the potential for ignition misfires commonly known as “spark blowout” at high RPM levels when running a JMS BoostMAX™ or other tuning products, we recommend checking or replacing the sparkplugs and setting the plug gaps as listed below in the chart.
